Avery ‘Doc' Hall, age 90, of Waseca died Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Colony Court in Waseca. Born in Bailey, Iowa on August 23, 1918, he was the son of Adison and LaVina Bell (Williams) Hall. He attended school in Le Roy, MN and Evansville, WI where he graduated from Evansville High School in 1935. He served in the US Army from 1941 until 1963, a career soldier for over twenty years. He served in the South Pacific Theater throughout World War II. He also served through the Korean Conflict and part of the Vietnam Conflict serving a thirteen month tour of duty in Korea and a three year tour of duty in France. He retired from military service at Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, PA. On August 26, 1944 he married Alice Moe in Chicago, IL. Upon military retirement, they moved to Waseca where he opened his own upholstery shop, The Furniture Hospital, which he operated for ten years. After closing his shop, he continued to upholster at the Mitchell Furniture Store for the next eight years. He retired as an upholsterer in January 1981. He was elected to two terms on the Waseca City Council and in 1975 was elected Mayor of Waseca in which he served until November 1987, having been elected to six consecutive terms. Mr. Hall was a life member of the VFW, the DAV, National Veterans Association for the Blind, the American Assoc. of the Blind, and the National Assoc. for Uniformed Services. He was a member of the American Legion, the AARP, Waseca Senior Citizen Center and the Waseca Historical Society. He was active in the community serving two terms as Commander of the VFW, served on the boards of the Waseca Senior Citizen Center and the Waseca Historical Society, the advisory board of Farmamerica, on the local Boy Scout Council and on the State Highway Variance Committee. While mayor, he served as chairman of Council of Governments, President of the League of Outstate Cities and was a member of the Region 9 Commission. He is survived by one daughter, Tana (Michael) Schimschock of Rosemount; one son, Mark (Iris) Hall of Fairfax, VA; four grandchildren and a sister, Vivian Schiel of St. George, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife-Alice in 2003, one daughter-Starr Blair in 2008, one sister-Ruth Schmidt, and one brother-Milan Hall. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2008 from 5-7 p.m. at the Kinder-Dennis Home for Funerals in Waseca, and will continue one hour before services at the church on Monday. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 13, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Evangelical United Methodist Church in Waseca with Rev. Elden Eklund officiating. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
