An English Test cricketer. He enjoyed a very good career at first class level, averaging over 40 and scoring 55 centuries, and being a member of the Lancashire team which won a hat-trick of championships in 1926-28. But his misfortune was to be in the same era as several other great opening batsmen so he only got the chance to play 2 Tests, seven years apart. He did not fail, averaging 42 and showing what might have been if only.
