Betty Ruth Alexander, age 83, of Greeneville, passed away Tuesday morning (March 10, 2015) at Laughlin Healthcare Center. She was born December 12, 1931, in Greeneville, TN, a daughter of the late Hurdis and Mabel Goodman Hamblin.

She retired from Woolworth’s after 34 years of service. Mrs. Alexander served on the Greene County Commission from 1989 until 2010. While serving as a County Commissioner she served on various committees.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she kept the nursery for many years. She had also helped with Asbury Child Enrichment Center and was a member of the Bobbie Pierce Study Group. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Women of the Moose, the Greene County Republican Party, and the Greene County Republican Women’s Club.

Betty Ruth loved sports, especially Greeneville High School football and basketball and the Vols. She had served as host in the hospitality room Greeneville High School Basketball games. She enjoyed playing rook.

Mrs. Alexander was a recipient of the Robert C. Austin Award for Distinguished service to the Community.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Melissa and Brad Prewitt of Hixson, TN; one grandson: Alexander Prewitt of Hixson; one sister: Elizabeth Bible of Greeneville; one niece: Debby Hendrix of Greeneville; one great-nephew: Kevin Hendrix.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Hugh Alexander in 1991; parents: Hurdis and Mabel Hamblin; one sister and two brothers-in-law: Helen and Uel Wilhoit and Don Bible; one niece: Vickie Overton.

The family will receive friends from 1 – 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11th, at Asbury United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow visitation at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The Rev. Jerry Jones will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Roger Jones, Roger Woolsey, M.C. Rollins, Alex Prewitt, Marty Smith, and Brian Cutshaw. The Greene County Commissioners that she served with during her terms will honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church or Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of Laughlin Healthcare Center, Dr. Fred Myers and his staff, and the staff of Amedisys Hospice.
