Virginia (Hamblin) Britton of Wareham died Tuesday, January 10, 2017.

She was born on May 27, 1929 in Boston. She was the daughter of the late Frank D. Hamblin and Margaret E. (Thompson) Hamblin. She graduated from Melrose High School, class of 1947 and from the Chandler School in Boston.

From 1951 until 1986, she was employed as an administrative officer for the United States Navy Department in Washington, D.C. During her tenure, she worked for the Bureaus of Ordnance, Surface Missile Systems, and Surface Warfare Systems. She received numerous awards throughout her career including the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Medal. She retired with 35 years of service in 1986 and moved to Wareham in 1988.

Mrs. Britton was an officer in the Wareham Historical Society and a longtime volunteer at Tobey Hospital. She also enjoyed travel and the theater.

She is survived by cousins in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Florida.

Her funeral service will be held at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham. Burial will follow at Agawam Cemetery Wareham MA..
