“Big Bill” Hanlon played one season as a first baseman for the Chicago Cubs in 1903. He appeared in eight games over 10 days with the Cubs, from April 16 to April 26, with two hits in 29 at bats for a .095 batting average. The Cubs primary first baseman at the time was future Hall-of-Famer Frank Chance. Hanlon, a 27-year-old veteran of the California State League, was signed by the Cubs as a back-up for Chance shortly before the start of the season.

Hanlon died in 1905, at the age of 29.
