During WW-II, Carsten John Hanson was a Seaman 2nd Class on the Destroyer USS Mugford DD-389. While on patrol near Lunga Point, Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, a Japanese air attack dropped bombs onto the Mugford. Carsten was seriously wounded and transferred to the USS McCawley AP-10 for medical treatment. Carsten died on August 9th, 1942 and was buried at sea. Twenty of Carsten's shipmates also died from that air attack.

Carsten John Hanson, was the son of Otto Olaf Hanson and Juana Maria Ysach Ruiz.
