He was the son of John Wesley Hanson and Rosalia 'Rose' M (Bleth) Hanson. He had one sister, Anna Jean Hanson Johnson, and his brother was Sgt and Judge Bruce Peter Hanson, who was a WWII USAAF Veteran, shot down over the skies of Europe, and survived as a POW at Stalag Luft III.

He graduated from Minot High School in Minot, North Dakota. He was gifted in academics, especially physics and mathematics. He received his officer's commission 5 December 1941 at Miami University in Miami, Florida, two days prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor.


The crew disappeared in New Britain, Papua New Guinea and are listed here in the virtual cemetery for B-17F #41-24458.
