Shirley Jean (Hardman) Nettles-Aumock, 79, and LaVerne James Aumock, 83 of La Crosse, formerly of Frametown, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2016 and September 17, 2016, (respectively) at Gunderson Health Systems, La Crosse, surrounded by the love of family.
Shirley was born on May 28, 1937, at Nicut, W.Va. She was employed by Braxton County Schools (WV) for 25 years as a teacher, teacher coordinator, and school counselor. She was a National Certified Counselor and a WV Licensed Professional Counselor. Throughout her life she worked with youth as a foster parent, church leader, and teacher. She graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1953, two years early; Glenville State College in 1971 and received a Master's Degree from West Virginia Graduate College in 1974. She presented many workshops on the emotional development of children and the educator's role in this development.
Jim was born September 11, 1933, La Crosse, Wis. He was employed by Trane Company (La Crosse, Wis.) for 37 years, where he was a proud union member. He was also an Army veteran serving his country for two years from 1953-1955 in camps in Kansas, Miss., and Mich. Jim was a 1951 graduate of Onalaska High School. In his youth, he played in the Erickson Drum and Bugle Corp with his brother, George. He was an original member of the Coulee Rider's Club in 1948. Jim was also an avid blood donor donating many gallons of blood.
Shirley loved to camp, travel; people in general, kids and dogs. She lived a quiet, unpretentious lifestyle with a special joy found in books and gardening. She had the courage and strength to stand up for what she thought was right and a determination to make her life count for the good of others. Family came first and was the center of her being. Her love touched many lives as did her humor. She had a southern charm which many in the north found irresistible.
Jim loved baseball, especially the Brewers, traveling, the Green Bay Packers, music and puzzle books. Singing brought him a special joy. He believed in the power of unity. He enjoyed politics and would eagerly express his opinion. He had a love for his country and had the pleasure of going on a Freedom Honor Flight in 2014. One of his favorite accomplishments was converting his republican wife to become a democrat.
Shirley and Jim entered into their marriage on June 15, 1985. At that time, Shirley moved from West Virginia to begin her life with Jim in Wisconsin. They then returned to West Virginia after Jim's retirement where they lived for 20 years, returning to Wisconsin for health reasons. They had an undying love for each other; so much so that Jim died only 65 hours after the love of his life.
Shirley was a loving mother and is survived by Patrick (Lynn) Nettles of Frametown, Michael (Vera) Nettles of Watoma, Wis., Brent (Cricket) Nettles of Duck, Brad (Brenda) Nettles of Strange Creek, Jenny (Susan) Nettles of LaCrosse, Wis., Emma Criner of Frametown, Jeannie (Bill) Jackson of Gassaway, Harold (Loretta) Huddleston of Nicut, Jerry Huddleston of Lesage. She was a loving grandmother to and survived by 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Shirley is also survived by her first husband and father of her children, Halman Nettles of Elmira. Jim was a loving step-parent and grandparent to all as well. They are also survived by two very special ladies, Mary Samuelson and Christine Willkom, whom they loved as their own.
Shirley is preceded in death by her grandson, Daniel Nettles; and granddaughter, Nicole Nettles. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Jane Aumock; and one brother, George Aumock.
The family would like to thank the Benedictine Villa of La Crosse for the fantastic personal care they received and the many friendships formed over the short three months. They would also like to thank Meal on Wheel of La Crosse for their service and friendship to Shirley and Jim. A big thank you is extended to Gunderson Health System personnel who provided wonderful care; as well as being so accommodating.
