A. F. Harris, Widely Known Educator And School Head At Verona, Expires Tuesday

Albert F. Harris, 68, widely known Preble county educator who was serving his third year as superintendent of the Verona schools, died Tuesday afternnoon at Reid Memorial hospital, Richmond, Ind., after a brief illness. He had been admitted to the hospital Saturday. Mr. Harris, a long-time resident of Eaton, had been affiliated with the Preble county schools for more than 35 years and had served three Preble schools as superintendent. He was superintendent of the Monroe township schools for 12 years and served a similar period as administrative head of the Lanier school prior to assuming the superintendency at Verona.

In addition, he had taught for four years in the Eaton high school, and had also taught in the Dayton Fairview system. His teaching career began in 1917 when he was superintendent of the Richfield schools in Henry county.

A veteran of World War I and first commander of the Eaton American Legion post, Mr. Harris had also been engaged in private business and had served as a public relations official for the state highway department.

Mr. Harris was a member and past president of the Eaton Rotary club and had served for more than 15 years as Washington township clerk. He was a past worthy patron of the Eastern Star and was active in Legion affairs Red Cross, Marchof Dimes and other civic groups.

He was a member of the Eaton Congregational Christian church, Bolivar Masonic lodge and chapter, the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. He was also a member of the Ohio Teachers' association and the National Education association.

He was a native of Eaton and was graduated from Eaton high school. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Defiance college and did graduate work at Miami and Bowling Green universities. He was also a graduate of the Indiana Business school in Richmond.

Final rites will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday from the Barnes Funeral home in Eaton, with the Rev. Robert Sherrill, pastor of Eaton First Presbyterian church and a fellow Rotarian, officiating. Burial will be in Mound Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday.

Survivors are his wife, Harriet, a teacher in the Lanier schools; and two brothers, Raymond, Eaton postmaster, and Ralph, Eaton auto dealer.
