Edna Rose Harris was born into the prominent Harris and Funke families of Lincoln Nebraska.

Born in Ord Nebraska shortly before her family left for Denver Colorado. Ord Nebraska was a small but quickly growing boom town where her father Edward was Cashier and likely part owner of the Ord National Bank. Edward was also elected treasurer of Ord. Edna would have moved back and forth between Colorado and Nebraska while her father pursued various businesses regarding livestock feed, and livestock wholesale. Edna had two older sisters named Clara and Sarah.

Her mother Hedwig "Hattie" Funke was eldest daughter to prominent German immigrants from Lincoln Nebraska. Hedwig was originally born in Burscheid, Prussia immigrating to the United States at 6 years of age. Her father had a successful liquor whole sale business and opera house, but did not live long after her marriage. Her Uncle was postmaster, and well known Civil War Veteran Otto Funke.

Much of her years were spent in Evanston Illinois, where she met her future husband Harold Alling. Attending Northwestern University she was member of the Eulexia Literary Society, Women's club and Kappa Kappa Gamma fraternity. The Kappa Kappa Gamma fraternity was hosted at her home in Evanston. Edna harbored progressive feminist beliefs for the time, which was perhaps influenced by her Aunt Sarah Harris who was likely a friend of her mother's before her marriage. After school Edna worked with Jane Adams at the Hull House in Chicago.

Eventually marrying Harold Munger Alling, Edna traveled to California with her husband and infant daughter Dorothy to be closer to her family, which had retired in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California. In California Edna and Harold had one more daughter Sidney Alling. Around this time Edna developed a life long friendship with famous Director Dorothy Arsner. For many years Edna ran the Studio Club sorority and dormitory. Edna also continued activities in the Kappa Kappa Gamma for years after her graduation. She was a loving mother to two daughters Dorothy and Sydney and, grandmother, and great grandmother to many children. She died at the age of 102 years old, at her advanced age she became deaf, but she was able to read lips.
