The son of a miner, David moved to the U.S. in 1843 and settled in Ohio and later to Michigan where he worked the copper mines. He eventually moved on to Pittsburg where he married Margaret Jones. He moved to Denver in 1873 and on to Los Angeles in March of 1882 where he retired.

He is credited with laying out and building the city of Mineral Ridge, OH.
