Found Agnes' birth record on Family Search website. "Illinois Births and Christenings 1824-1940" Flim #0107621568, page 428 of 587, line 166. May 13, 1888. She was 48 when she died.
Agnes was perennially in her late 30's.
According to the death certificate, Agnes' parents were Henry Huff and Sara McKinsley and she was born in Illinois. Family stories say that Agnes left her birth home at about 13 or 14 years old to work as a Harvey Girl in the new Fred Harvey Restaurants. There is a supposition that perhaps she had a first marriage to a Williams and lived in Joplin, MO. (New Information! She married John E. Hempfling using the name Agnes J. Williams in Leavenworth KS, 1924) We have an inscription in a World War I New Testament, "From Mrs. A. Williams to Dan. Williams 523 Main St. Joplin, Mo." When she met Jack Hempfling, she was working in a restaurant near the 12th street viaduct. Jack was on the construction crew for the viaduct (ca. 1914-1915). We don't know what year they married, but they later adopted three children: Harry H. 1925; Harvey B. 1926 and Agnes P.(Aggie-Pat) 1929. On Harvey's birth certificate, Agnes' maiden name is listed as "Williams". While money was good during the twenties, soon the depression hit and the family lost their home and business. Agnes took in laundry to help support the family. However, her health deteriorated until she was unable to care for her children. The boys were sent to boarding school (KC Boys Orphans home), while Aggie-Pat remained at home. Agnes was able to have the boys return for a time until her final illness began in 1936 when the boys again stayed at the orphanage. Agnes passed January 3, 1937 during one of the coldest winters in Kansas City history. She was buried in Mount St. Marys Cemetery, where for many years her grave remained unmarked. Early in this century, her sons, Harry and Harvey, placed a headstone, wanting to have this accomplished before their own passing.
