Obituary for Charles J. Herschell Jr.
Charles served in the United States Army during World War II with the Field Artillery division. He worked on the family dairy farm and also as a Head Mechanic for the Army Corps of Engineers in Pomona, KS, retiring in 1986. Charles continued working until he was 80, helping Stan Friesan farm.

Charles was a member of the United Methodist Church in Overbrook, KS and also American Legion, Anderson-Raible Post #239.

On December 23, 1939, Charles was united in marriage with Lucy Finch at the Worden Evangelical Parsonage. In 2012 he and Lucy celebrated 73 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on December 8, 2013.

Charles was the leader of the Herschell clan. He lived for his family which includes kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids! He always worried more about them than himself, even when dying. Charles welcomed everyone into his family. He was a loving father and a wonderful friend, loved by everyone.

Charles is also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elvin, Harold, and Kenneth Herschell; and two sisters, Luella Saathoff and Elaine Daniel.

Charles is survived by a son Jim and wife Letha Herschell of Barstow, CA; four daughters, Mary and husband Bill Engle of Michigan Valley, KS, Vonna Hendrix of Topeka, KS, June Ware of Roxbury, KS, and Scharlet and husband Jay Sherwood of Milford, KS; fifteen grandchildren; forty-three great grandchildren and fourteen great-great grandchildren.

The family invites friends to join them for a visitation at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2014 at Overbrook United Methodist Church in Overbrook, KS. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. June 20, 2014 at Overbrook United Methodist Church in Overbrook, KS.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to American Legion, Anderson-Raible Post #239 or Brookside Nursing Home c/o Greenwood-Roberts Funeral Home, Overbrook, Kansas. Condolences may be sent to the family through www.lamb-roberts.com.
