Born on Gilleland Creek,Travis County, TX to Maj. William Hickman and Minerva Frances (Vernon) Hill. He married Eustacia Dabney and had eleven children, practiced law in Beeville, purchased and operated a rice plantation in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, ran the Miller Hotel, and platted Six Shooter Junction. He also founded Harlingen,TX.
