Hazel Teague Hill of San Benito passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2011, in McAllen, Texas, at age 100 years. She was born in Atkins, Arkansas, on March 20, 1911, the daughter of Lula and Robert Teague. Hazel married Earl C. Hill in l927 in Arkansas and moved to the Valley in l930.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Earl C. Hill; her sons, Kenneth and Robert Earl Hill; her parents, Lula and Robert Teague; her brothers, Henry and Robert Teague; and her granddaughter, Kelly Yung.
Survivors include her daughter and husband, Joyce and Joe Hawkins of McAllen and their children and spouses: Kathryn and Russell McGilvray of McAllen, Kristen and Dennis Gary of Hewitt, and David Hawkins of Austin. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Anna and Erin McGilvray, Devin and Jack Gary, and Tanner and Tyler Hawkins. She also leaves behind her son's step-children and spouses: Mike and Melanie Newland of Ottawa, Kansas, Greg and Marilyn Newland of Denton, Mary Beth and Reagan Ross of Rockport, Pat and June Newland of Fayettville, Arkansas, and Kathy and Robert Koenig of Markham, their children and grandchildren.
Hazel was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Benito (Borderland Church) for 70 years. She was secretary at the County Extension Agency and worked as secretary and bookkeeper for the Hill Box Company. She also did bookkeeping and secretarial work for the Elks Club. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who will always be remembered for her innate goodness and devotion to her family.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 27, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Henry Thomae Funeral Home, 701 N. Bowie, in San Benito.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, at Henry Thomae Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of one's choice.
