Jewell Hilton Bonner
September 20, 1919 - December 16, 2016
San Diego --- Jewell H. Bonner passed away December 16, 2016 at the Kaiser Permanente Zion Hospital, San Diego, Calif.Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Aztlan Mortuary, 7856 La Mesa Blvd, La Mesa, CA 92942 on January 9, 2017. Burial will be at 11:00 AM at the Miramar National Military Cemetery on January 10, 2017.
Jewell worked for General Dynamics, retiring after 30 years.She was truly a dedicated volunteer. Her service to First Presbyterian Church of San Diego was to teach a Sunday school class for ten years, work in the nursery, and was a member of the Wedding Committee for 30 years. She was designated a "Woman of Dedication" by the Salvation Army. For the Navy League of the United States she served as San Diego Women's Council President, Southern California State President, and Pacific Southwest Region President. She was inducted into the Navy League Hall of Fame, She received the Secretary of the Navy's "Superior Public Service Award" and endowed the Jewell H. Bonner scholarship giving preference to American Indians. For the San Diego Zoological Society she served on the "Rendezvous In The Zoo" (R.I.T.Z) Committee every year since 1985, co-chairing the event in 1997. She endowed the Bonner Summer Fellowship at the San Diego Zoological Center for the Reproduction of Endangered Species. (CRES). R Mecca Temple No 34, Daughter of the Nile it was her great pleasure to cut out patterns and sew layette and dolls for the children at the Shriner's Hospitals.
She is survived by her loving husband James Bonner and her sister Maudie Hilton Long, Carson City, Nev., and several nieces and nephews.
