On January 20, 2006 Zina Hinckley Ashton passed from this life to join her husband, Arden Lindsay Ashton, who died in 1997. She was surrounded by family and will be missed by all. We are grateful that she has joined her husband of 59 years. Zina missed him immensely and looked forward to being with him for all eternity. Zina was born February 15, 1916 in Hinckley, Utah the 14th child of Alonzo A. Hinckley and Rose Robison Hinckley. While a young girl, the Hinckleys moved to the Capitol Hill area of Salt Lake City, UT. There she met Arden who, as fellow student at Lafayette Elementary School, took delight in dunking Zina's pigtails into the inkwell on his desk. They became best friends and Zina later enjoyed telling stories about how Arden would wait on her front porch whenever she was on a date to make sure she got home safely. Zina married Arden in the Salt Lake Temple September 17, 1938 and became the mother of eight children. With Zina's support, Arden became a successful masonry contractor. They were both active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Zina served as a teacher and in other callings. She loved music, was an accomplished violinist and an avid reader with a great appreciation for learning. Her greatest joy, however, was witnessing the weddings of all her children in the Temples of the Lord and supporting her five sons while they served LDS missions. Zina firmly believed that families could be together forever, and her legacy of faith has blessed all of her children, 56 grandchildren, and 84 great-grandchildren. Zina is survived by her children, Penny (Robert) Tripp, Idaho Falls, ID, Patricia (John) Cory, SLC, UT, Pamela (Ed) DeGraffenried, Kanosh, UT, Dr. Arden (Lorraine) Ashton, Jr, Roger (Colleen) Ashton, Laird (Robin) Ashton, Paul H. (Mindy) Ashton, all of SLC, UT, and Dr Alonzo (Ellen) Ashton, Las Vegas, NV; two sisters, Beulah (Ford) Rose and Nellie (Byron) Jones. She was preceded in death by Arden; her parents; 11 brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be January 28, 2006 at the Brookshire Ward, 3487 South 1300 East, SLC, UT. Zina will be laid to rest beside her husband at 200 North "N" Street, SLC Cemetery.
