Died
May 17th, 1880, Mrs. Harriet E. H. Allen, wife of T. D. Allen, of this city, aged 38 years, 8 months and 17 days.
Mrs. Allen was born in the town of Harmony, Chautauqua County, N. Y., and at five years of age was moved, with her parents, Thomas G. and Eunice L. Hinckley, to the town of Columbus, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where she resided until married to her surviving husband, to whom she was united July 4th, 1866, having at that time by a former husband, a son 6 years of age, who is now a resident of Buffalo County. Mrs. Allen has left a number of relatives in Nebraska and Pennsylvania to mourn her loss. Four children by her is left to the care of her husband, who mourns her loss as only those can mourn, who knew and appreciated her many sterling virtues. Devoted to her husband and children, as a wife and a mother, she knew no rest until all their wants were supplied. Her great ambition was to make home happy, and she had worked long and hard to get to Nebraska, where she and her family could enjoy the comforts of a homestead which had been taken in Buffalo County, and upon which her husband had just finished a comfortable and neat frame house. Part of her household goods were moved to her home the day she was taken down, and she anticipating great enjoyment with her garden and flowers. Mrs. Allen was a lady of culture and refinement: great lover of flowers and art, and of a modest and retiring disposition. She never allowed a vulgar or profane word to pass her lips, or tolerated them in her house. While she was not a church member, she was a great believer in the teachings of Christ, and at all times respected the religion of those with whom she came in contact. She always taught her little ones their evening prayers, and impressed upon their minds the strongest principles of morality. Torn from the fruition and leaving a sorrowing husband and children, she has gone to a higher and better life, where they hope they may be allowed to meet again. Her aged mother, Mrs. Eunice L. Hinckley, lived with her and still survives, aged 83.
Mrs. Allen was confined to her bed only one short week, a wasting lung disease terminating her life, when her spirit returned to the God who gave it, and her earthly body was laid away to rest. Years may come and go, and he body crumble to dust, but her precepts and example will live in the hearts of her dear ones, and cause them to please God for such a wife and mother. T. D. A.
