Oscar A. Hindemith, 89, Bismarck, died Aug. 5, 2000 in a local care center. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Todd Hylden officiating. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Oscar was born Jan. 14, 1911 in Java, S.D., the son of Fred and Katherine (Rieger) Hindemith. He grew up and attended schools in Java, and Ashley. He came to Bismarck in the middle 1920's and began working for French and Welsh Hardware until 1948, when he and his brothers Walter and Ted, opened Hindemith Tin Shop in Bismarck. A skillful tinsmith and true metal craftsman, Oscar did custom sheet metal work which is still evident on church steeples and structures in the Bismarck area. He retired from the business in 1978 at the age of 67.

He married Irene Dablow on Oct. 13, 1935 in Bismarck. Together, they enjoyed camping and traveling and being with their children and grandchildren. Oscar entered the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in November, 1997.

He was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Elks, the Eagles, the Masons and served on the Board of Directors of Sunset Memorial Gardens.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Agnes, Omaha, Neb.; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Bob Barnett, Bismarck; three grandchildren, Paul Hindemith, Omaha, Neb., Lynsey Barnett, Northfield, Minn., and Ryan Barnett, Bloomington, Minn.; one brother, Walter Hindemith, Glendale, Ariz.; and several nieces.

Oscar is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ted and Wilbur and one sister, Annetta Harter.
