DNA testing reveals Maria and her direct female descendents are of the clan of "Ursula" (mtDNA haplogroup U). Ursula lived about 45,000 years ago in what is now northern Greece near present-day Delphi. Ursula hunted with sophisticated stone tools. Her clan displaced the Neanderthal humans. Some of the earliest cave art was done by the clan of Ursula. About 11% of people of European ancestry are descended from Ursula.
