Born in Pulaski County on April 14, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Alexander Kyle Holliday and Lula Lee Robertson Holliday.
She was predeceased by her husband, Glen Irvin Ballinger.
Ferne was employed by Hercules Powder Company, Radford Army Ammunitions Plant, for 27 years. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Glenna B. Luttrell, of Annandale, Va., and Mrs. Jo Ann B. Scott, of Durham, N.C.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2009, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom T. Ballard Jr. officiating. A private interment service will follow. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 p.m. until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 330 Church Street, Wytheville, Va. 24382. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va., is in charge of arrangements.
