Maxene was born in Carmichael, SK, the second of six girls born to Flossie and Elmer Holliday. The family moved to Cawston, BC when she was 18, and she found work in the orchards and tomato fields.
On April 14, 1949, she married George Balas and they resided in Keremeos, BC, where George operated a garage. In 1952 they moved to the family farm near Aneroid, Sk. They raised their 4 children there and in 1973, retired to Summerland, BC. After George passed away, Maxene moved to Okanagan Falls where she resided the rest of her life.
Maxene enjoyed gardening, family reunions, reading, studying her bible, curling, and coached the Ladies softball club at Pinto River. She developed Lupus in her later years but still tended a small garden patio. In 1972, she was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and had a special interest in the prophecies of Revelation. She is described as a person who was always open to other people's opinions, was generous and a good listener and friend.
Maxene passed away in Okanagan Falls, BC on January 28th, 2012, at the age of 85 years.
Maxene was predeceased by her husband George Balas in 1989, her parents Flossie Holliday in 1966, and Elmer Holliday in 1952.
She is survived by her 4 children, 3 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and 5 sisters.
A Memorial Service was held on February 6, 2012 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Penticton, B.C.
