Karen was born on September 20, 1938 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Frank Newton and Mary Elizabeth (Sturgell) Holliday. She married Dowane Bartel on January 19, 1958 in Emporia. He survives at the home.
Other survivors include: sons, Stephen Dowane Bartel and wife Rhonda of Mulvane, Kansas and Christopher Frank Bartel and wife Mindy of Madison; daughters, Natalie Spellman and husband Jason of Emporia and Nicole Bartel of Bentonville, Arkansas; brother, Pastor Phillip Holliday and wife Carolyn of Round Hill, Virginia; stepbrother, Richard Holliday and wife Gay of Lenexa, Kansas; sister, Jo Emerson of Topeka; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren and one on the way.
She is preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Margaret Holliday; infant sister, Mary Jeanne Holliday; stepsister, Phyllis Saffer; and great-grandson, Gracen Rowland.
For 25 years, Karen worked for AT&T as a telephone operator. After that she was a school bus driver for Southern Lyon County U.S.D. #252, and was a C.M.A. at Hartford Inc. in Hartford, Kansas. She was a member of the Olpe United Methodist Church in Olpe, Kansas.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 6, 2012 at Olpe United Methodist Church with the service conducted by Pastor Lucille Barb of the church. Burial will be in Maydale Cemetery southeast of Olpe. A visitation will be held Sunday, February 5, 2012 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.
The family suggests instead flowers, memorial contributions be made to Olpe United Methodist Church Building Fund, and sent in care of the funeral home.
