Obituary for Dorothy Barker

Dorothy J. Barker, 70, of Coldwater, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Sturgis Wesleyan Church with Pastor Steven Bean officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Girard. Visitation will be Sunday, August 3, 2014 from 4-7:00 PM at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater and prior to the service on Monday, beginning at 10:00 AM at the Sturgis Wesleyan Church.

Dorothy was born April 1, 1944 in Buffalo, NY to Edward & Lillian (Lugsdin) Holtz. She was the youngest of 4 girls. Dorothy attended Houghton College in New York where she met Garreth L. Barker. They were married on September 5, 1964 in Alden, NY and then moved to Coldwater.

Dorothy worked for five years as a case worker for the State of Michigan. While her children were small she was a stay at home mom and babysitter for many children. She returned to work when her children were in school, teaching pre-school at His Spot for Tots at the First Baptist Church for 23 years, retiring in 2001.

Mrs. Barker was an active member of the Sturgis Wesleyan Church. Throughout her life, her love of children led her to devote much of her time to a variety of different children's ministries. Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother, but her grandchildren held a very special place in her heart. She enjoyed attending as many of their activities as she possibly could. She cherished the time they spent together, especially at the lake. She collected pop can tabs and regularly took them to Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati after the death of her granddaughter, who had spent many months there.

Dorothy is survived by her husband Gary, her children Danice (Pat) Chartrand of Coldwater, Kevin (Stacie) Barker of Quincy, and Tracy (Dave) Martinson of Marshall, her sisters Margaret Walker of NY, Thelma Kelly of MO, her grandchildren Christopher Chartrand, Maddy, Jacob & Micah Martinson, Zachary & Hunter Barker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lillian Ewert and her granddaughter Rachelle Barker.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Sturgis Wesleyan Church or the Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati.
