RICHMOND, Ind. – Frank Andrew Hunyadi, age 91, of Richmond, Indiana, died Monday, March 27, 2017, at Friends Fellowship Community.

Born December 19, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Andrew and Mary Androcec Hunyadi, immigrants from Austria and Hungary, Frank spoke only Croatian and Hungarian as a child in his home. He learned English when he started school. Frank was a 1944 graduate of Rayen High School in Youngstown, Ohio, where he was senior class president. He was a pentathlon athlete, golfer, participated as a Golden Gloves welterweight boxer, and received honorable mention as an Ohio high school football right guard.

Frank was drafted immediately following graduation from high school and inducted into the U.S. Army. He participated in basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and advanced training as a paratrooper at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and served in combat during World War II. As a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, 504th Regiment, Company C, Frank made approximately six combat jumps in Belgium, France, and Germany. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Remagen Bridge. Frank took part in a victory celebration with his unit on 5th Avenue in New York City, marching with General Gavin, Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. He was his army battalion’s welterweight boxing and wrestling champion. Frank received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1946, with the rank of corporal.

Following his military service, Frank was invited to play football and obtain an education at Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio. He played football for two seasons and earned honorable mention recognition for the All-Conference team. While attending Wittenberg College, Frank met fellow student, Allelia Rust, a 1946 graduate of Richmond High School. They were married on August 15, 1947, and remained married for 56 years. He received a BS degree in mathematics with minors in social studies and science from Wittenberg College in 1951, earning some credits through Earlham College. Frank obtained master’s degrees in mathematics, social studies, and education from Ball State Teacher’s College in 1958, and attended Illinois Institute of Technology receiving a post master’s degree in mathematics training. He taught school for three years at Tecumseh High School in New Carlisle, Ohio, and 34 years in Richmond Community Schools, both at Hibberd Junior High School and Richmond High School. Frank retired in June 1989, after teaching for 37 years. While a local teacher, he served for several years as an assistant junior high football coach and as a field judge for many years for field and track meet events. Frank attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Family was always his number one.

Survivors include his three children, Michael (Patricia) Hunyadi, Stephen (Carol) Hunyadi, and Christie (John) Deffner; six grandchildren, Vanessa (Darren) DeBoo, Amanda Hunyadi, Stephen (Emily) Hunyadi II, Joanna (Jonathan) Pierce, Marie (James) Jennings, and Alyssa (Seth) Brown; and five great-grandchildren, Raleigh and Nevin DooBoo, John Stephen Hunyadi, Samuel Jennings, and Ethan Brown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Allelia Rust Hunyadi, who died February 24, 2004, and parents.Burial will be in Lutherania Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
