PARDEEVILLE - Agnes M. James, age 97, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 12, 2014, at the Heritage House in Portage, Wis., where she had resided for the past three months.
She was born to Thomas B. and Agnes E. Ramsay on Jan. 28, 1917, in the township of Caledonia, and was the oldest of eight. Growing up on the family farm gave her the love of the outdoors and fostered an avid interest in gardening and raising flowers.
She graduated from Portage High School in 1935 and went on to attend Stout Institute in Menomonie, Wis. In 1939, she married the late Donald James and in 1940, moved to rural Pardeeville, where Don was manager of "The Hickories" farm. She lived 73 years on this farm and was an active member of the community. Loving God and helping others were important to her all her life. She was a member of the Caledonia Presbyterian Church and North Scott Baptist Church and was active in the Sunday school and church mission work. She was a 4-H leader, a member of the North Scott Homemakers club, an excellent cook and a strong supporter of her children and grandchildren's achievements and activities. Her quick smile, twinkle in her bright blue eyes, and her strong character will be missed.
Survivors include three children, Carolyn (John) Lumsden, Neal (Patricia) James, and Suzanne (Stephen) Woggon-Cummings; six grandchildren, James and Cole (Amanda) Smith, James (Kileigh) Woggon, Cara (Mark) Cross, Scott (Chelsea) James, and Eliesa Woggon (fiancé Josh Norton); four great-grandchildren, Macy and Lane Cross, Kashton James, and Oliver Woggon; four sisters, Margaret, Marian, Billie and Beth; sister-in-law, Ruth; and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Ellsworth and Ronald; sister, Doris; and son-in-law, Stephen Woggon.
A Memorial Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the NORTH SCOTT BAPTIST CHURCH, Pardeeville, Wis. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the donor's favorite charity.
A special thanks to the staff at the Heritage House for the wonderful care they gave Agnes and to all the family and friends that visited her there.
