Ervin Harold Jensen was born Sept. 26, 1916 in Manette (East Bremerton), WA, to Danish immigrants Christian and Valborg (Pedersen) Jensen, who pioneered in Manette. He was the fifth of six children and grew up on his parents' strawberry farm in Manette.

He attended Manette grade school and Lincoln Jr. High and in 1933 graduated from Bremerton High School. He attained journeyman status in two trades: auto mechanic in local garages and machinist in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He was also commuting intermittently to the University of Washington, where he earned a degree in journalism in 1951. Later that year he took his first newspaper job in Juneau, Alaska. He combined this work with his hobby of fishing.

In 1954 he returned to Bremerton and to employment as a reporter and columnist for the Bremerton Sun (now Kitsap Sun). He left this position in 1966 to become technical publications editor for the Research and Engineering Department at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport, WA, retiring there in 1978.

On Sept. 21, 1956, in Longview, WA he married Donna Flaugher. They became the parents of twin daughters.

Erv was athletically talented, particularly in fastpitch softball. He starred in state tournaments with Bremerton teams and Northwest Regional (Washington -Oregon-Idaho-Montana) tournaments between 1935 and 1954. He was twice named to the all-Regional team, once as a pitcher and once as an outfielder. For those performances he was inducted into softball's Northwest Regional Hall of Fame in 1983.

In "retirement" he was an active member of the Manette history Club and editor of the Manette history book, "Manetter Pioneering," published in 1988. He also authored an Alaska fishing book, "Little Boats and Big Salmon," published in 1999.
