Anchorage resident Carl A. Johnson, 85, a former radio operator, died July 30 at home. A visitation was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Eighth Avenue and E Street. A funeral immediately followed at the chapel with the Rev. Fritz Lampe of Central Lutheran Church officiating. Burial followed at Anchorage Memorial Park.

Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 3, 1904, in Northwood, N.D. He was raised in Havre, Mont. He worked in the electronics and communications field as a telegrapher and broadcaster in the Pacific Northwest. He married Alice Thompson of Spokane, Wash., in 1934. They came to Alaska in 1939 with the AA and CC, a division of the lighthouse department. From 1942 to 1946, he was a U.S. Navy operator in the Aleutians during World War II. Following the war, he went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration in the communications division and retired from there in 1965. He then traveled as a radio operator with merchant marines for seven years, sailing to various ports around the world. He later worked as a parttime relief radio operator for the Alaska Marine Highway.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Alice, and his son, James, both of Anchorage; his daughter, Patricia Biss of Wasilla; his sister, Vera Landskov of Enumclaw, Wash.; four grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild.
