Pioneer Alaska resident Elizabeth Johnson, 101, died Jan. 3 at her Anchorage home. A funeral was at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Bleivik and the Rev. Halleck Greider officiating. Burial was in Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was born April 9, 1892, in Bengtsfors, Sweden, to Matilda and Jan Johansson. She came to the United States with her brothers in 1910 and attended Adelphia College in Seattle for two years. In 1912, Mrs. Johnson moved to Nome where she worked as a cook for the gold mining company where her brothers worked. While there, she met Andrew Johan Landstrom and they were married Aug. 29, 1914. They moved to Seattle and lived there for three years. In 1917, Mrs. Johnson and her daughter, Evelyn, returned to Alaska to join Mr. Landstrom in Anchorage. In 1936, he built the Landstrom Apartments, which she managed after his death in 1943. In 1960, she married Victor Johnson. In 1962, they were honored as King and Queen Regent of the Fur Rendezvous by Pioneers of Alaska. Mr. Johnson died in 1972. Her son-in-law said, "Her family and friends have always been the center of her world, and many call her 'Morm', from the Swedish word 'Mormor,' for 'grandmother.' " Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was active in church and school activities while her children were growing up. She was also a member of Pioneers of Alaska Auxiliary #4. She enjoyed doing handiwork and had crocheted many beautiful afghans, according to her family. Mrs. Johnson also enjoyed needlepoint, flower gardening and being with her family. She liked having friends and neighbors over for coffee and meals. Besides her two husbands, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her daughter, Evelyn Martin in January 1991.
She is survived by her son, Franklin Landstrom, and daughter, Jean Donatello, both of Anchorage; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Sherwood, George Donatello, John Martin, Mary Hines, Ben Donatello, Margaret Donatello, all of Anchorage, and Alice Martin of Coupeville, Wash.; six great-grandchildren in Anchorage; and many nieces and nephews in Sweden. Memorial donations may be sent to the Hospice of Anchorage, 3605 Arctic Blvd., Suite 555, Anchorage 99503. Arrangements were handled by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
