Lifelong Alaskan, commercial pilot and fisherman Arthur Harrison Johnson III, 70, died Oct. 28, 2007, in Dillingham. A celebration of his life was in Dillingham and was officiated by Dan O'Hara of Naknek. A potluck was afterward at the Dillingham Senior Citizen Center. As per Artie's request, he was buried next to his mother and brother at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery, 535 E. Ninth Ave. The graveside service was held there.

Artie was born on April 30, 1937, in Nelson Lagoon to Arthur II and Nina Johnson. He had four siblings, Sandy, Clifford, Herbert and Donna. Living in remote Alaska, Artie learned to fly at a young age. His other passion was being a commercial fisherman. His love of fishing and flying is instilled in his children, Herman Butch, Arla, Teresa, Arthur IV and Dennis, whom he had with Marlene Schroeder. During his career as a commercial pilot, he flew for Roy Smith Flying Service. Partnering with Martin Seversen, they bought the flying service from Roy Smith. When Roy first flew with Artie to check him out, he said, "Artie put on an airplane like any other guy put on a pair of pants." One of their main flights was to ferry school children from South Naknek to Naknek every day. In the summertime, Artie fished. After living in Anchorage for a few years, Artie finally settled in Dillingham to be near his children and grandchildren, where he had lived for the last 14 years.

Artie is survived by his children, Butch, Arla, Teresa and Dennis; his grandchildren, Butch Geronimo, Scharell, Kimberly, A.J., Devin and his wife Meredith, Dwayna, Dennis Agli, Dariann, and Randy; his great-grandchildren, Kylee, Artie Louise and Frankie Marie; and his sisters, Sandy and Donna. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clifford and Herbie; son, Artie IV; and daughter-in-law, Charlene. His family wrote: "Artie lived life to the fullest and was a very gentle, kind man. His love of his family and friends knew no bounds." Visit the online memorial at legacy.com
