Former Anchorage resident Mary Sylvia Galliett died at home in Oroville, Calif., on Feb. 10, 2010, in the presence of her husband of 60 years, Harold H. Galliett, Jr. She passed away peacefully. At Mary's request, no service was held. She was interred at Anchorage Memorial Cemetery.

She was born April 4, 1921, on the family farm near Harrisburg, Mo., to Charles William Johnson and Goldie Thelma Watson. She attended a two-room school until the age of 13, when her family moved to Phoenix, Ariz., during the Depression in 1934. During World War II, she was a war worker for North American Aviation, inspecting parts for warplanes near Los Angeles. She later moved to San Francisco, where she met the love of her life -- her future husband Harold -- in the spring of 1948. They were married on Dec. 31, 1949, at the San Francisco City Hall. With her husband in the U.S. Air Force, they also lived in Ohio and then Alaska starting in 1954. They recently celebrated their 60th anniversary on Dec. 31, 2009. Mary had the job of homemaker until her children were grown, and for the next 14 years became the office manager for her husband's engineering firm. In 1988, Mary and Harold retired to the Central Valley of California near Oroville. Mary lived for her family, and will be dearly missed.

Apart from her husband, she is survived by a sister, Nellie Gertrude Hughes (Phoenix); daughter, Ana Marie Sweet of Indianapolis, Ind.; sons, Norman of Sacramento, Calif., and Roger of Anchorage; daughter-in-law, Linda; and son-in-law, Robert. She was preceded in death by her children, Harold H. Galliett III and Susan Elizabeth Galliett; and by her parents; brother, Robert; and sisters, Dora and Marjorie Roberts.
