JOHNSON, CARL ANDREW, Lieutenant Junior Grade (no. O-177056), USS McCawley, US Navy, †30/06/1943
Wife, Mrs. Thelma Lee Johnson, 952 N. Alfred, Hollywood, Calif.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SINKING OF USS MCCAWLEY (APA-4)

USS McCawley (AP-10/APA-4) was a McCawley-class transport for the United States Navy which served in World War II. The Navy designated McCawley as AP-10, a transport. Later in 1942, the Navy sent McCawley to join the Pacific Fleet, where the ship would be redesignated APA-4 and reclassifed as an Attack Transport.

McCawley would come under fire and be struck by a torpedo (killing 15 in the engine room) from a Japanese plane on 30 June 1943 in Blanche Channel. However the critical blow to the ship came a few hours later, when a group of US PT boats mistook the McCawley for an enemy ship, and torpedoed her. Fortunately, all were already rescued from the ship. www.wrecksite.eu
