USS Neosho (AO-23) in Battle of the Coral Sea

After surviving the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Neosho operated in the South Pacific. During the Battle of the Coral Sea she was attacked and set alight, but managed to keep afloat until rendezvousing with an American destroyer on 11 May 1942, who sank her with gunfire after taking off the crew.

On May 7th 1942, oiler USS Neosho (AO-23) and destroyer Sims (DD-409) are attacked by Japanese planes. Neosho is damaged by bombs and a crashing dive bomber. Destroyer Sims is sunk. Neosho damaged and adrift since 7th May and deemed beyond salvage, is scuttled on 11th May by torpedoes and gunfire of US destroyer Henley (DD-391).
