Lifelong Alaskan Georgiana Agnes Johnson Chercasen, 49, died of injuries sustained in an automobile accident Oct. 15, 1998, in Anchorage. A funeral was conducted at St. Innocent Orthodox Christian Cathedral. Father Nicholas Molodyko-Harris officiated. Pallbearers were Daren Wright, Henry Sam Jr., Gilbert Sam, Eugene Bordikofsky, Anthony Johnson and Nikander Shane. A burial service followed the funeral at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. Afterwards, a luncheon for friends and family was held at the home of friends.

Mrs. Chercasen was born April 25, 1949, in Juneau. She grew up there and attended Chemawa Indian School in Oregon. After graduation, she attended Hayward Nursing School in Freemont, Calif. After completing nursing school, Mrs. Chercasen settled in Sitka, where she worked for Mount Edgecumbe Hospital for a number of years. While employed there, she also worked as a medical transcriber. During this period, she met Nick Chercasen and married him on Sept. 4, 1973. The couple moved to Anchorage about 10 years ago. Mrs. Chercasen was active in the Russian Orthodox churches in both Sitka and Anchorage. She was a reader and church choir member. She also enjoyed sewing. Her family said she possessed a good sense of humor and sensitivity to others. She enjoyed coming to the aid of friends and family. When her father became ill, she was able to use her nursing skills to help him recover from heart surgery.

Mrs. Chercasen is survived by her husband, Nick; daughters and sons-in-law, Alexandria and N. Rodriguez and Michelle and Daren Wright; parents, Joseph and Agnes Johnson; sisters, Cheryl Duncan, Josephine Johnson and Audrey Sam of Sitka, and Virginia Sam of Anchorage; brothers, Joseph Johnson Jr., Everett Johnson, Henry Johnson and Jacob Johnson, all of Juneau, Michael Johnson of Arizona; her beloved grandson, Terry Wright; brothers-in-law, Henry Sam Jr., Gilbert Sam Sr. and Tony Johnson; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her uncle, Leonard Gamble; sister, Cynthia June Johnson; and her aunt, Corrinne Leach. The family suggests memorial donations to St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 3031, Sitka, 99835.
