Eagle River resident LILLIE MANGHILD (JOHNSON) FIELDING, 76, died peacefully April 16, 2000, at Alaska Native Medical Center. A funeral was held with a visitation at the Eagle River Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A short social gathering with refreshments was held afterward, followed by burial beside her husband at Aurora Borealis Cemetery in Wasilla.
Mrs. Fielding was born Nov. 18, 1923, to Wassilesha Massinista and John Johnson at a Libbey's fish saltry that was located just above the present fishing village of Egushik on Bristol Bay. She attended school in Dillingham. An industrious young woman, her family said, she worked at the Dillingham Hotel and other jobs. She met her future husband, Merle Smith Fielding, during World War II, when he was delivering a winter fuel supply to Dillingham with his Army unit. Mrs. Fielding was involved in the Aleutian Campaign during the war. They were married in Seward, and shortly after, she left to stay with her mother-in-law in Colorado to wait for his return. Mrs. Fielding had been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1942 and served in various callings within the church. One of her hobbies was gathering genealogy of Bristol Bay people with her daughter, Karla. She also enjoyed berry picking, garage sales, serving her fellow man, visiting friends, and working in LDS temples. She had been an honored Elder in the Bristol Bay Native Corp. and Chugiung. Her family said: ''Mom was a devoted wife and mother of six children. She loved Alaska, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed, but we know with a surety that where she has gone, she will be loved as much as she is here.''
Mrs. Fielding is survived by her children, Karla Jeffers of Anchorage, Russell Fielding of California, Jackie Jones of Palmer, Steven Fielding of Utah, and Jim Fielding of Eagle River; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Nels Johnson; half-sister, Mary Tilden, both of Dillingham; niece, Sassa Dunn of Anchorage; and many other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Annie Johnson; brother, Charley Franklin; son, Richard Niels Fielding; and husband, Merle Smith Fielding. In lieu of flowers, checks may be made payable to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Family History Department, c/o Jackie Jones, P.O. Box 2414, Palmer 99645. Arrangements were by Evergreen's Eagle River Funeral Home.
