Hallie Austin was born June 4, 1919, in Dekalb, Texas, to Moses and Merdia Johnson. She was called to be with her Lord, June 20, 2007. Hallie married Washington Austin, Sr., Nov. 12, 1938, and moved to Malaga, New Mexico in 1941 and on to Carlsbad in 1942.

Hallie was baptized at Beaver Dam Baptist Church and was a long time member, until moving to Carlsbad, where she united with the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, serving faithfully in many capacities until her death.

Hallie was a domestic worker for several years, her favorite past times were knitting, crocheting, quilting and writing letters to her many friends, also, sharing words of wisdom about life or the Lord. She walked blocks to visit the sick at their homes or made special efforts to visit them at the hospital.

Hallie's kindness to others shined throughout the community. She was respected by adults as well as children and memories of her love for cooking made her known as the tea cake and sweet potato pie lady for many years.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Moses and Merdia Johnson; husband, Washington Austin, Sr.; sisters, Thelma Pirtle and Thressa Carson; daughters, Katie Wagoner and Lovie B. Kelly; granddaughters, Elsie Rigsby, Katie Lewis and Yvette R. Austin; grandson, Kevin Clark; niece, Willie Jordan; daughter-in-law Beverly Austin; sons-in-law, Henry Wagoner and the Rev. A.D. Burton.

She leaves precious memories to brothers, Joe King and Billy Johnson; sons: Joe M. Austin (Beverly) Colorado, Springs, Colo., Gene Austin, Inglewood, Calif., Washington Austin, Jr. (Gail), Houston, Henry Austin (Diane), Carlsbad, and Alvin R. Austin, Carson, Calif.; daughters: Mildred Colter and Ada Burton, Carlsbad, Bettye Rogers (Cody), Inglewood, Calif., Rebecca Day (Harvey), Stone Mountain, Ga., Naomi Jackson (James), Del Rey Beach, Fla; 27 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
