BARNETT Mildred K., 93, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, passed away on March 7, 2009. She is survived by her sons, Arnold (Mary Jo Sollecito) of Cincinnati, OH and James (Carrie) of Charlotte, NC, her grandchildren Richard (Carrie) of Cincinnati, OH and Tracie Bowling (Damon) of Lawrenceburg, IN, her great grandchildren Sydney and Joey Barnett of Cincinnati, and Remy Bowling of Lawrenceburg. Mrs. Barnett is the widow of Attorney Joseph N. Barnett ; they were married for 50 wonderful, happy years. Mrs. Barnett lived in Amsterdam, NY with her husband, Attorney Joseph N. Barnett.
She was born in New York City on April 8, 1915 to Arthur and Sadie Kaye. As a beautiful young woman, she graduated from high school and then attended 2 years of finishing school. She then met Mr. Barnett, fell in love, got married and moved to Amsterdam, NY where she became active in Temple of Israel, as well as many charitable and social activities. Mrs. Barnett was past president of Hadassah, past president of Temple of Israel sisterhood, and a member of O. R.T. Mrs. Barnett was also an outstanding Bridge player and obtained the highest honor in Bridge as a Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League. Upon Mr. Barnett's retirement, they moved to Fort Lauderdale. After Attorney Barnett passed away in 1987, Mrs. Barnett continued to live an active life and to maintain their condo on Gulf Ocean Drive. As the years passed by, she continued to live a full and fruitful life until two months prior to her 94th birthday. Each day would find Mrs. Barnett driving to shop, have lunch or dinner at a restaurant with her friends and to play Bridge. Always one to be proud of her appearance, she would never miss her weekly beauty parlor appointment, or visit her family in Charlotte, NC or Cincinnati, OH. Her last out of town trip was to an annual dinner dance in Cincinnati, which her son and daughter in law, Arnold and Mary Jo, held each year where she danced the night away with both family and friends. When introduced each year to the attendees by her son, no one could believe she was in her 90's. Her doctors could not believe that she was almost 94. As one of her doctor's remarked, recently, "When I first saw her I could not believe that she was 93. She has the body, stature, and appearance of a 70 year old woman and the mentality and drive of a person in their 40's. She is remarkable." Commented by her attorney after her passing was, "She was one in a million" Others remarked, "She was the matriarch, she was the glue of the family. She was incredible." Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 17th, from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 18th, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. Donations in Mrs. Barnett's memory may be made to The Joseph N. Barnett Scholarship Fund, Albany Law School, Office of Development, 80 New Scotland Avenue, Albany, NY 12208 or Damon Runyon Walter Winchell Cancer Research Foundation, One Exchange Plaza, 55 Broadway, Suite 302, New York City, NY 10006.
