Loretta Jean Kennedy Durbin was born in Dayton, Ohio, on February 05, 1944. Loretta "Jean", 72, passed on January 10th, 2017 in Fayetteville, NC. She has joined her Lord and Savior after a courageous battle against stomach cancer.

Loretta began her military career in the Navy as a "WAVE" in 1962 after graduating from Robinson High School in Tampa, FL. In 1976, she became an active duty member of the Army upon graduating from the ROTC program at Central Michigan University. She was the first female graduate of their ROTC program. Loretta was then stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC, with her three young daughters. During her time at Ft. Bragg, she met her future husband, James P. Durbin. They married on April 14, 1978. Loretta and family moved to Germany for three years where she developed a love for traveling. After returning to Fayetteville, NC, in 1983, Loretta continued to work civil service for the Army as well as being in the Army Reserves. She retired from the Reserves with the rank of Major. Loretta returned to Germany in 2003 as a civil service member for the Army. She spent three years there before returning permanently to Fayetteville in 2006. Loretta retired in February 2010 with a total of 34 years combined in civil and military service.

In Fayetteville, Loretta continued her close friendships with many people as well as making new ones through church. Loretta became a member of Cedar Falls Baptist Church in 2000. She became active in her Lamplighters Sunday School class as secretary and assistant treasurer. She served on both the Budget and Recreation Committees, and was Chairman of the Bereavement and Decoration Committees. Loretta also was an assistant first grade Sunday school teacher, assisted in the church nursery, Vacation Bible School, and Wednesday night meals. She was a member of the choir, former Director of WMU, project leader of Operation Christmas Child, and served as the Food and Program Committee Chairman and was a member of KIT Club. Loretta was Den Leader for Den 1 of Cub Scout Pack 895 and Webmaster for Pack 895.

Loretta's loves in life include family, traveling, scrapbooking, puzzles, and anything Disney, especially Mickey Mouse. She was happy to share her love of traveling with family who came to visit her in Germany. She enjoyed a cruise on all of Disney's cruise ships, three of them on the Inaugural Voyage. She travelled extensively throughout Europe but also to the Caribbean and Asia. She enjoyed her trips to Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Turkey, Alaska and many, many other places. Loretta's highlight of her trip to Israel was being baptized in the Jordan River.

Loretta's family include her husband, James P. Durbin; daughter Tammy R. Hurt and her husband, William Brown; daughter Cindee M. Campbell and her husband Jeffrey, daughter Michele R. Kennedy and her husband Michael Gephart; daughter-by-friendship Lisa A. Popish. Additionally, Loretta's loves of her life include her grandchildren Alexandra K. Campbell, Connor G. Gephart, Teagan M. Gephart, Brenen E. Gephart and Alora M. Popish. Loretta maintained a friendship with her first husband, Delbert E. Hurt. Loretta was pre-deceased by her parents Carl A. Kennedy and Elsie M. Kennedy, her brother, Carl W. Kennedy, and her sister, Lois Ferrell.

Burial will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Please wear purple in celebration of Loretta's life.
