Virginia Ruth Barrett, 83, of Galesburg, died Friday March 8, 2013 at 2:15 p.m. in Seminary Manor, Galesburg.

Virginia was born November 25, 1929 in Liberty, Mississippi, the daughter, of Charles and Mary (Kile) Knox. She married John Robert "Bob" Barrett on September 23, 1953 in Olympia, WA. Bob and Virginia enjoyed over 55 years of marriage. Bob preceded her in death on May 12, 2009. Virginia is survived by a son, John Thomas (Sheila) Barrett of East Galesburg; a sister, Leila Ring, of Springfield; a grandson, John E. "J.B." (Sarah) Barrett of Wataga; two granddaughters, Katy (Danny) Morrison of Blandinsville and Courtney (Randy) Olsen of Park View, IA; four nieces and five nephews including Thomas and Charles Roberts of Louisiana, who were like Virginia's own sons. Along with her husband, Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, two infant brothers, and three sisters.


Virginia graduated from Springfield Lauphier High School in 1947. She worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for Ipava Farmers Elevator for 20 years, until moving to Galesburg in 1973.

Virginia loved and adored her three grandchildren and her family. She loved baking apple pies with her precious granddaughters and was very proud of her grandson who followed in the family footsteps by becoming a third generation railroader. She also loved to sew.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home. Rev. Deus-Dedit Byabato will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Bukoba Diocese.
