Paul lived a very unconventional life. He lived under a bridge for many years, by choice. His mom's will left him a house - which he quickly sold. He didn’t have, nor want, all the things most people consider essential, such as a soft bed, a roof over his head, a hot shower, heat in the winter, A/C in the summer, a fridge, microwave, washer and dryer, three meals a day. However, he always seemed happy, always smiling and wanting you to smile with him. He told his twin sister that he "wakes up happy every day".

Paul was a very interesting guy. At a family get together one year, he told the tale about this pet owl he had. According to Paul, he went down by the creek one morning and saw an owl sitting on a rock all tangled up in fishing line. He got the owl untangled and they became friends. The owl would come around in the early morning for a while and would just perch on a low limb close to him. He said one time the owl perched on his shoulder. He said that the local children who lived in the area of the bridge he was living under talked about him being a “Troll living under the bridge”.

His twin sister said that Paul used to go around singing this song about a Moon Shadow; he probably saw a lot of moon shadows in his time. Paul was a likeable guy and kind hearted. He used to adopt stray dogs and care for them. God made each and every person unique in their own way. Paul was unique in his own way. It’s hard to say what God’s plan was for Paul, he touched so many people in his life with his kindness and simple lifestyle. Strumming on his guitar, or sitting around a camp fire having good conversation with his numerous friends is where one would find Paul. If one looked into Paul’s heart, they would see he had a good one. Proverbs 27:19 says, “As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man”. Was he really homeless? He never felt "at home" in the traditional home surroundings that we call home. He always felt more at home outside, communing with nature. His home was God’s creation.

Paul loved Turkey Creek, especially the area called "the falls" and the ‘big rock’. Matthew 6:21 says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. There is a special peace by a creek in the woods, even just sitting on a rock, or on some pine straw and listening to the sound of the water going by. This part of Turkey creek is beautiful. This is where you go to write songs and poems and to meditate and/or pray, a place where you find a special peace.
