Mabel C. Hanson, 93, formerly of Pelican Rapids, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls.

Mabel Catherine Hanson was born on Nov. 14, 1914, near Glyndon to Torjus and Kathryn (Anstadt) Langlie, the oldest of four children. On Nov. 17, 1934, she married Sigvold Hanson in Moorhead.

For several years she worked along with her husband as he built homes around the area. Together they bought a 40-acre farm near Star Lake where they lived, raised vegetable gardens and milked. During the summer their produce was sold at area grocery stores as well as to tourists. Along with the vegetables, Mabel would offer baked goods freshly made for the lake area residents.

Following Sigvold’s death in October 1972, Mabel scaled back her gardening and baking and went to work for the Good Samaritan Home in Pelican Rapids in the dietary department. During that part of her life she earned her GED and finished the program for Dietary Supervisors at the University of North Dakota when she was 65-years-old. She continued working as manager of the kitchen and dietary supervisor until she was 70.

Throughout her life she enjoyed quilting and embroidering, with always a few projects going on. She completed numerous quilts for people all over the United States, including one piece donated to a museum in New York City.

Mabel is survived her daughter, Carol (Ron) Peterson of Dent; two grandchildren, Jim (Sue) Peterson of Fergus Falls and Cathy (David) Vauge of Pelican Rapids; six great-grandchildren: Amber, Lacey, Ashley, Alyssa, Josh, and Justin, as well as one great-great grandson, Hunter.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sigvold, Sr. in October 1973, and a son, Sigvold, Jr. in November 1955 and two sisters, Ella Henjum and Violet Combs.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with prayers at 7 p.m. led by Chaplain Ken Austin, resuming one hour prior to the service at the church
