Mendon Pioneer Taken by Death— Sophie Larsen Andersen, 86 pioneer resident of Mendon, died Sunday of ailments incident to age. Mrs. Andersen, a widow of the late Andrew Andersen, had been a resident of Mendon of seventy-seven years, having crossed the plains with an ox-team in 1862. Her husband died in 1922. She was born February 7th, 1853, in Ogusborg, Denmark, a daughter of Magnus and Mary Hansen Larsen. Surviving her are the following children: Mrs. Catherine S. Gibbons and Lars M. Andersen of Mendon; Andrew O. Andersen, John C. Andersen, Ezra T. Andersen, Mrs. Bruce Pitt, all of Arbon, Idaho; one brother, Peter Larsen of Mendon; twenty-eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at two p.m. in the Mendon ward chapel. Burial will be in the Mendon cemetery under the direction of the Lindquist and Sons mortuary. ~The Herald Journal, May 8th, 1939, page 1.

Mendon Pioneer is Eulogized— Beautiful funeral services for Mrs. Sofia Andersen, Mendon's oldest pioneer woman, were held Tuesday in the Mendon ward chapel with Bishop Henry C. Sorensen conducting. A request number, "Come, Come Ye Saints," was sung by the choir, led by Kay Sorensen and with Mrs. Ellen Ladle at the organ. Prayers were offered by Oliver Taylor and Joseph N. Sorensen. Speakers who eulogized the noble character of the pioneer woman, who walked across the plains when she was only ten years old, were Jens Jensen, Mormon D. Bird, President Colon Sweeten of the Curlew stake, Edgar S. Hancock and Bishop Sorensen. Special musical numbers included a vocal solo by John O. Hughes, accompanied by Mrs. Mozelle Sorensen at the piano, and a duet by Mrs. Burton Napier and Mrs. Cleo Hansen, accompanied by Mrs. Dorothy Blaisdell, all of Malad City, Idaho.
