Ruth L. Baker, 86, of South Main Ave., Albany, died Wednesday August 27, 2003, at Albany Medical Center Hospital. Mrs. Baker was born in Mechanicville, N. Y., and was the daughter of the late Robert Earl Leighton and Georgianna Leighton She was a graduate of Mechanicville High School and Oneonta State Teachers College. She worked as an elementary teacher at various schools. She retired from teaching from the Albany Academy for Boys in 1973. She was a longtime member of the Emmaus United Methodist Church. At various times, she served as church school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, church trustee and was active in the United Methodist Women.

Preceded in death by her husband, Winfield H. Baker, who died in 1960, Ruth is survived by her two sons, Daniel Baker and his wife Sharon of Pittsfield Mass. and Scott Baker and his wife, Katherine of S. C.; one sister, Mildred Heywood and her husband Robert of Va.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a nephew, Gregory; and two nieces, Christine and Lisa.

Funeral services Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Saturday morning after 11:00 am. in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at Hudson View Cemetery, Mechanicville, N. Y. Those wishing to remember Ruth and her family in a special way may send contributions to the Northeastern New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, 1717 Central Avenue, Albany, N. Y. 12205.
