Aged 65 years. Buried in the Bergen/Van Hoff plot.

1st husband: VAN HOFF, HENRY, was born in 1804, in the city of Philadelphia, and came to Springfield, Illinois, in the spring of 1838. He was for many years engaged in the wagon and carriage making business, with Obed Lewis. It was one of the first establishments of the kind in Springfield. Henry Van Hoff was married in Springfield, March 4, 1840, to Susan A. Lewis. They had six children in Springfield. Henry Van Hoff died Dec. 20, 1854, in Springfield, and his widow was married Nov. 19, 1857, to Rev. John G. Bergen, D. D. He died, and she resides in Springfield, Illinois.

2nd husband: BERGEN, REV JOHN G, D.D. was married at Springfield, IL, Nov. 9, 1857, to Mrs. Susan A. Vanhoff. Rev. Dr. J. G. Bergen died Jan. 17, 1872, and his widow reside in Springfield. -1876 Early Settlers of Sangamon County, IL

Mrs. Susan A. Bergen, widow of Rev. Dr. Bergen, formerly pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of this city, died at twelve o'clock Saturday, at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Bell, of an attack, of appoplexy, at the age of sixty-five years, one month and ten days. The following sketch of her life is furnished by one who knew her long and well: No one in this community possessed a more marked and well known religious character, or was more devoted and useful in the work of ministering to the poor and those in affliction. Of a peculiarly meek and humble spirit, gentle, sympathetic, thoughtful, unwearying and unselfish her nature, her long residence in this city, and the position which she occupied for many years as a clergyman's wife, had made her almost as widely known as Father Hale, and as highly respected and beloved.

Her maiden name was Lewis, and she was born April 14, 1814, at Bascomb Ridge, N. J. She was the youngest of eleven children, and an only daughter. Her ten brothers all grew to manhood, and all married. She removed with one of them to the State of Illinois, more than forty years ago, and was married in March, 1840, to Mr. Henry Van Hoff, with whom she lived as a faithful wife for fourteen years. He died in December, 1854; three years later, in November, 1857, she was again married to the Rev. Dr. Bergen, who was formerly pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and after his death remained a widow, until called herself away. Her funeral will take place from her late residence at 2 o'clock to-day. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL 5-26-1879
