Jessie J. Lincoln, Abingdon Chapel 94, of rural Galesburg, Ill, died at 4:50 pm Wednesday, July 3, 2013 in the Care Center of Abingdon.
She was born October 26, 1918 the daughter of Austin T. and Minnie A. Harris Meadows. She married Wilford E. Lincoln on May 19, 1940 in Abingdon Christian Church Parsonage. He preceded her in death on August 11, 2008.
She is survived by her children, Gary (Kathie) Lincoln and Chris M. Lincoln both of rural Galesburg, LuAnn Ekstrom of Springfield, Va. and Janet (Charles) Cunningham of rural Galesburg; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren and her niece, Mavis Meadows of Abingdon, who provided her special care. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Thomas E. Lincoln, a brother, Elmer H. Meadows and two sisters, Louise E. Meadows and Beryl Alice Sickles
Jessie was a traditional farm wife of the old school with Wilford's farming and raising their five children having top priority.
She was an excellent seamstress, making all of her children's clothing and school costumes, including the boy's shirts and reversible Sunday suits.
The was a dedicated gardener, food preserver and voracious recycler. You didn't dare waste water or throw anything away if it wasn't used up. She never failed to work the daily crossword puzzle, cryptogram and word search. She rarely used the dictionary to solve them. Her talent for working jigsaw puzzles was family legend and she enjoyed putting them together with family and friends.
She loved all birds and blooms, all animals, great and small, and God's fresh air.
She had been a member of the Loyal Workers neighborhood club, comprised of the lady residents of Route 3 Galesburg.
Jessie was a faithful member of the Christian Church of Abingdon since 1925. She managed the church nursery for many years, loving and enjoying the children she cared for, documenting their birth date and genealogy. For a number of years she delivered the church bulletin and papers to the residents of the Care Center of Abingdon.
The grandkids (and a few others) are missing her full cookie jar, special sweet tea, her memory for names, dates and places, and her quick comeback answers and comments.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, July 13, 2013 in the Christian Church of Abingdon. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. A private family burial will be held in the Abingdon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Christian Church of Abingdon or to the Knox County Farm Bureau Foundation.
