Darrel Edward "Lucky Lindy" Lindberg, formerly of Northfield, passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at N.C. Little Hospice in Edina, Minn.

Darrel, born in Northfield, was a resident of Real Life Cooperative in Bloomington, a former long-time resident of Richfield, and a 32-year employee of Honeywell.

He was a member of Richfield American Legion Post 435, Bloomington VFW Post and the Northfield VFW Last Man's Club. Lindy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and survived the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Philippines, while aboard the USS Kalinin Bay. While living in Northfield he played baseball, and later in Richfield was involved in building the East Richfield Little League and Babe Ruth programs. In later years he enjoyed golf with friends and family. Lindy always felt "lucky" to have so many good friends through the years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Alice; two sons, Thomas (Karen) of Minnetonka and Alan (Nancy) of Northfield; grandchildren, Krista (Josh) Steinhouse and Jennifer (Eric) Denney; great-granddaughter, Genavieve Steinhouse; and sister, Gennevieve.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy, Violet and Joyce; and brother, Donald.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at Morris Nilsen Chapel, 6527 Portland Ave. S., Richfield. A private interment will be in Fort Snelling Naional Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to the House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Richfield or N.C. Little Hospice.
