Major League Baseball Player. The diminutive left-hander pitched six years in the big leagues with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1945-47) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1948-50). With many big-league stars in the military, his 5-foot-7, 158-pound frame was overlooked. The Dodgers liked his competitiveness. He was 10-11 in 1945 with a 3.31 earned run average and 203 innings pitched. He improved to 13-10 the following season with a 2.89 ERA in 193 innings. In 1947, he was 12-11 with a 2.99 ERA and made two starts in the World Series against New York. The Yankees, who eventually won the Series in seven games, cuffed him for nine hits and five runs in four innings in a 10-3 victory in Game 2. Then he permitted five hits and four runs in 2 2/3 innings in Game 6, but he got no decision as the Dodgers won 8-6. He was traded with 37-year-old outfielder Dixie Walker and pitcher Hal Gregg on Dec. 8, 1947 to Pittsburgh for pitcher Preacher Roe, third baseman Billy Cox and infielder Gene Mauch. He was 10-9 with a 3.70 ERA for the Pirates in 1950. His six-year career totals were 50-51, a 3.68 ERA and 42 complete games in 100 starts.
