Mrs Florence Long Bartow died yesterday morning at the home of her sister, Mrs O A Harper, at 8:30, after an extended illness. The sudden death of Mr Harper last week came as such a shock that Mrs Bartow was taken very seriously ill, from which acute condition she never rallied.
All Athens mourns the loss of such a lovely woman and deeply sympathizes with the family in their double sorrow. Mrs Bartow was one of the most gifted and charming women of the state. She was rich in the endowment of all the graces and accomplishments of the sweet, gentle woman, possessing personal beauty and unusual mental gifts. Her striking personality won for her countless friends. She was to the manor born and comes from a distinguished and cultured family.
Her father, Dr Crawford Long, immortalized himself in the great discovery of ether and apart from his unusual skill as one of the South's greatest physicians, he was one of the most courtly gentlemen of the southland, and contributed largely to the making of Georgia history.
Mrs Bartow was a devout Christian and a great worker in the church and active in all social affairs of Athens until her illness necessitated absolute quiet and rest. She was true to the highest and noblest ideals and the after glow of a life so beautiful will radiate in the home and all the walks, where her sweet presence shone as an everlasting benediction.
She has nobly won her great reward - rest - from the petty strifes of life and rich in her Heavenly blessings.
Mrs Bartow was the widow of the late Mr John L Bartow, of Waco Texas, and is survived by three sisters: Mrs O A Harper, Mrs Florence Long Taylor, and Miss Emma Long, all of Athens; on brother, Mr Edward C Long of San Antonio, Texas.
The funeral services will be conducted from the residence of Mrs Harper, 436 Dearing street, this afternoon at four o'clock by Dr Elam F Dempsey of the First Methodist church.
