PARENTAGE SOUGHT: Can Zerviah Hudson, bapt. 25 Feb. 1727/1728, daughter of Zerviah Schellinger/Schellinx/Samuel Hudson, be the mother of nee Mary Ludlow, aka Mary Ludlow Hedges, born 1754?

Please give credit to the early research and writings of author, Joseph Percy Crayon, who died at age 67 in 1908 (see his Morris County, New Jersey Find A Grave Memorial# 11176119 showing James Crain (Crane) (1812/1879) as the name of author Crayon’s father).

This Morristown NJ, Mary Ludlow Hedges parents are to be one of multiple men named Anthony Ludlow of Long Island NY, born ____ died ____ and his wife Zerviah “Sophia” Hudson, but Anthony’s correct parentage is very difficult. Sara Hanmer Ludlow does not seem to be his mother as set forth previously (in my earlier bio), quoting highly respected JP Crayon. Zerviah, which is an earlier form of the name Sophia, seems to tie to the Robert Hudson of East Hampton, NY line via eldest son, Samuel Hudson (1701/after 1764 NJ) , wife Zerviah Schellinger (Schellinx, etc) (b. 1705) daughter of Joanna Hedges and Abraham Schellinger. [see Joanna Hedges Schellinx, FindAGrave #136774516; Abraham Schellinx, FindAGrave #136773320] Following the Parke-Gildersleeve Genealogy, published _____ p113-117, _____, a Zerviah Hudson was child #3, bapt 25 Feb. 1727/1728, born in East Hampton NY. Could she be Sophia Hudson wife of one Anthony Ludlow/Ludlam?

This woman who was born Mary Ludlam or Mary Ludlow seemingly embraced the surname Ludlow since that surname (Ludlow) was passed down through her own HEDGES issue in southern Ohio. Mary is known to have had one sister Anne or Anna Ludlow who first married Mr. ________ Crane and (she) who in 1779 remarried as Anne Crane to Jeduthan Day. This Anna Ludlow Crane Day was born “at Long Island, died at Canisteer, N.J., May 9, 1838.”[Historic Homes and Places and Gen. and Personal Memoirs, Vol 4, edited by Wm. R. Cutter] Some confusion exists whether this Anna married a 3rd time, or whether it was Mary and Anne’s widowed mother, Sophia Hudson Ludlow who remarried in Morristown, NJ. (I believe it was her mother, Sophia, who became Mrs. Doty, due to the very precise verbiage employed within the original...) -- It is noted in Silas Day (1783/1867), Find A Grave Memorial# 16755000, Oak Ridge Cem., Passaic Co NJ, that he is a son of Ann Ludlow Crane & Jeduthan Day, and named a son Anthony Ludlow Day (1818/1898) Find A Grave Memorial# 16754858 among known 11 children. Also see Elizabeth Day, Find A Grave Memorial# 11076591, suggested as sibling to Silas Day.

Clicking on the cemetery map shows a road named Canisteer nearby. So, issue of both known sisters included male descendants carrying the Anthony Ludlow name (see Anthony Ludlow Hedges at Hedges Cemetery at Dunlap Station, Colerain Twp, Hamilton Co., OH where Anthony's father (Elias Hedges the younger/Eliz. Gaston) purchased the farmland very very early on (c1807? offhand but I am not looking at the deed sources, but Ohio became a state 1803).

Anthony’s Heritage Correction: No further support can be found which places Anthony Ludlam/Ludlow, husband of Sophia Hudson, within the issue or twelve children known for Sarah Hanmer/Gabriel Ludlow. So any flaw may be due to lamented forgeries by fraudster, Gustave Anjou (1863/1942) which complicated matters during author Crayon’s lifetime.-- Anthony’s Heritage Speculation: It might be that this line instead descends from the BridgeHampton, L.I., Mecox Cemetery line of Anthony’s, i.e.: ?Patience Rogers (or Patience Barnes d/o Samuel Barnes/Patience Williams?) Ludlam (1677/1708), Find A Grave Memorial# 31229525, 1st wife of Anthony (c1671/d. 1723) [note her 1708 death]; Anthony Ludlam (c1671/1723, age 53 yrs) Find A Grave Memorial# 31229571 [seems to be Anthony59 father of Anthony61 as described below] Anthony61 seems the same as Anthony30, but did he die in 1759?: Most promising seems to be various versions of the work by Author, George Rogers Howell—see the fourth Anthony, numbered Anthony61, The Early History of Southampton, which informs us via one entry on p340: “61 Anthony 4 had w. Zerviah and ch. 67 Anthony 6 , 68 Samuel 5 , 69 Mary 5 and 70 Ann. 5”[https://archive.org/stream/cu31924096849553/cu31924096849553_djvu.txt] Elsewhere in a Library of Congress, Call number: 7723688— version (multiple years of publication) included a 1759 death year for Anthony30 —was described as: “30 Anthony died 1759, had w Zerviah and ch. 31 Anthony, 32 Samuel, 33 Mary and 34 Ann.” Anthony61 is described as son of the third Anthony59, died 1723: “59 Anthony 3 d. Dec. 21, 1723, had 1st w. Patience, who d. Oct. 11, 1708, 2d w. Abigail and 3d w. Rebecca Shaw, mar. in E. H. Dec. 20, 1716. He had ch. 61 Anthony 4 , 62 Patience 4 , w. of Shaw, 63 Samuel 4 , 64 Phebe 4 , w. of Davis, 65 Sarah 4 w. of Baker, and 66 Temperance. 4” [ bio by findagraver, DBardes, June 2017 seeking proof of Ludlam/Ludlow origins-all clues welcome and appreciated!]

Extract of my own background submitted to findagrave c2014: Author Crayon also tells us about Mary Ludlow's sister, "Jeduthan [Day], born Jan. 28, 1748, married (1) Phebe, widow of Isiah Wines, Oct. 17, 1774 She died Mar. 2, 1777, aged 27 years. [He married] (2) Mar. 15, 1779, Anne (Ludlow) Crane, daughter of Anthony [Ludlow]. He died Nov. 9, 1815." [p281-283, The Day Family section]. It would appear that Crayon's initials, JPC, are the same as are written on the wonderful Hedges genealogical papers at repository, Morristown Free public library, so how fortunate it is, that his work was published and notes preserved! [years ago the hard copy papers still existed which I pulled as an out of town library patron...] We learn similar facts on the Ludlows from pgs 309, 315, "Anthony Ludlow of Long Island m. Sophia Hudson. Sophia, as his widow moved to Morris County NJ, and married second, Jacob Doty. Sophia had two daughters by her first marriage to Anthony Ludlow, namely: Mary Ludlow m. Elias Hedges q.v.; Anne Ludlow m. Jeduthan Day" [History of the First Presbyterian Church, Morristown, N.J. et al, By First Presbyterian Church in Morristown (N.J.) "Banner" steam print, 1885] [extract from my former bio by findagraver, DBardes Oct 2014, remainder deleted at this point in June 2017]

Remarriage to JACOB DOTY Clues: I notice on familypedia.wikia.com, a website I am not familiar with that an extensive Mayflower, Edward Doty Descendants listing is included there. Incredibly a man, Jacob Doty, designated as a son of Nathaniel3 Doty c1706/07, Piscataway NJ, below is included there as quoted, with a wife Zerviah:

"c) DOTY Jacob4 (D3324) c.1732-5 prob.Mendham NJ (Nat3,Sam2,Ed1) m. Zeruiah prob.c.1755-60 (HILp121) voter 1776/5 Mendham Twp Morris Co NJ (NJMorp100) d.<1792/1/30 Mendham, Morris Co NJ (HILp121,NJAser1v37p114[http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Edward_Doty_(bef1600-1655)/Descendants]

These references, supra, seem to be: "[V]. HIL: Hill, Peter B. ed. Edward Doty of the Mayflower and His Descendants for Four Generations. Plymouth MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1991; [W]. HILL: Hill, Peter B., compiler Mayflower Families Through Five Generations Vol.11 Part2 Edward Doty, Plymouth MA.: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1996." Since Mendham NJ, geographically is not far from Morristown NJ (where many Hudson/L'Hommedieu/Linsley-Lindly/Hedges/Mulford) family Presby. members seem to be buried) which often arose in the Parke-Gildersleeve Genealogy, p116, such family unit which seemed to point to Zerviah Hudson Ludlow-- this may be the correct remarriage of widow, Zerviah "Sophia" Hudson Ludlow (2nd wife of one Jacob Doty _____).

RECONCILIATION WITH CONKLIN MANN (1943): Further research indicates the need to align with author, Conklin Mann's detailed research published in 1943 in The American Genealogist (TAG) periodical. Author Mann adds an additional generation to that set forth above, which may add the important missing puzzle pieces. See Conklin Mann's research, as discussed in my 2017 bio on William Ludlam Jr's findagrave memorial # 180518569- imprecision and questions exist so be forewarned. Works in Progress Only.
