Jane arrived in America 31 May 1838 from London on the ship "Sampson" at the age of 8 years old. Her mum Martha Harnsby died 10 months after she was born, her father Samuel Lines gave Jane to her mother's brother Joseph Hornsby and his wife Ann to raise, since he was unable to care for her and her siblings. Jane arrived with her aunt and uncle, and cousin Martin and settled on Staten Island. Her father Samuel remarried and had at least 2 more children, he is found in the 1841 census, and not sure when he died.
